Diocese of Kumi (Church of Uganda)

The Diocese of Kumi is an Anglican diocese within the Church of Uganda, located in Kumi District in Eastern Uganda. The Diocese was established on 21 July 2001 to strengthen Christian ministry, pastoral care, and community development in the Teso sub-region.

The Diocese serves as the spiritual, administrative, and development center for Anglican congregations across its jurisdiction, which includes Kumi Municipality, Kumi District, Ngora District, and Bukedea District. Through its network of parishes, churches, schools, and health facilities, the Diocese works to promote both spiritual growth and social transformation in the communities it serves.

Leadership

The Diocese is currently led by Michael Okwii Esakhan, the Bishop of Kumi, who provides pastoral oversight, spiritual leadership, and strategic direction for the Diocese.

Structure and Reach

The Diocese operates through a structured church system that includes:

  • 12 Archdeaconries
  • About 45 Parishes
  • Over 300 Daughter Churches

Through this structure, the Diocese serves more than 300,000 people in the region.

Ministries and Institutions

Beyond its core church ministry, the Diocese of Kumi plays an important role in education, health, and community development. It oversees and supports:

  • Approximately 150 Church-founded schools (primary, secondary, vocational, and nursing institutions)
  • Health facilities, including hospitals and health centers serving rural communities
  • Community development programs such as Household and Community Transformation (HCT), youth empowerment initiatives, and livelihood projects.

Role in Community Development

The Diocese integrates faith and development, supporting initiatives that address poverty, education quality, health services, gender justice, environmental stewardship, and youth empowerment. Through partnerships with churches, government, NGOs, and local communities, the Diocese seeks to promote holistic transformation—spiritual, social, and economic.
